Zeitz MOCAA (*pronounced “zights mocka”) opened one year ago, almost to the day, on 22 September 2017. It is the largest museum of contemporary African art in the entire world, and it’s a space that’s worth your time.

What can I expect?
Explore more than 100 galleries featuring a wide variety of permanent exhibits and temporary installations – from sculptures to photographs, felt collages to paintings and much more. Prepare for striking florals, bold colours, subdued hues, a range of textures and fabrics, and imagery from the weird to the wonderful to the disturbing. It really has something for everyone.

Is there an entry fee?
There are a few price options to choose from:
Daily ticket: R 190 per adult
Annual membership: R 270
Annual membership for over 60s: R195

Zeitz Mocaa strives to make African art accessible to all, by offering discounts and free entry on certain days:
Under 18s: FREE entry year round. Make sure you have your ID.
FREE entry for all African citizens on Wednesdays between 10:00 and 13:00. Make sure you bring your ID.
FREE entry on Museum Night for the first 2 000 people, thereafter you pay half price. Last entry is at 21:30.
FREE entry on Heritage Day, 24 September, from 10:00 and 18:00. Last entry is at 17:30.
Half price (R95) every First Friday of the month from 17:00 to 21:00.

Can I visit at any time?
MOCAA is closed on Tuesdays, but make time to pop in on the following days:
Wednesday to Monday: 10:00 to 18:00. Last entry is at 17:30.
First Friday of the month: 10:00 to 21:00. Last entry is at 20:30.

In conclusion
Go early. You’ll be surprised how quickly time flies inside the MOCAA. I definitely plan to return as one visit is just not enough. Visit zeitzmocaa.museum for more info.
